Early detection is key for a higher survival rate after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection can make a difference in determining treatment. Early detection is what indeed changed my life. I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer, and the early diagnosis contributed greatly to me being able to tell my story and not someone telling my story for me. Encourage those around you, including yourself, to get screened for breast cancer. After being diagnosed, I wondered where did this cancer come from? I thought, I don’t know of anyone in my family with breast cancer. The funny thing about breast cancer…and yes, I used cancer and funny in the same sentence, you can contract breast cancer…even when genetically, it can’t be traced.

The day I was excited I didn’t have to give blood for the genetics test, then excitement turned to exhaustion because the test required so much saliva, but I proudly filled the tube to line.

In my case, like many others, my diagnosis wasn’t due to a genetic cause. I then realized, all I thought about breast cancer wasn’t true. I thought my mom or grandmother had to have a breast cancer diagnosis in order for me to contract the disease…soooo not true!

Along this journey, I’ve learned so much. I just knew breast cancer was just breast cancer, but who knew…
